Our Chapter

 

On January 13, 1979, the “Beautiful” Beta Iota Chapter was chartered at Spelman College. There was a line every year until the hiatus of 1984. In 1993, the chapter was triumphantly revived by Soror Teki Hunt, who was initiated through the Beta Beta Chapter at the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff. The chapter has been up and running ever since.

 

Soror Conniya Gardner - Fall 2023

President

Conniya Gardner is a junior Biology pre-vet major from Hampton, VA, currently serving as President for the 2024-2025 academic year. Conniya's favorite principle is service, as she believes it is her obligation to create the impact on others that she would want for herself, especially during life’s lowest moments. As President, she aims to enhance her chapter’s strength and support her sisters in achieving their goals, leaving a lasting legacy of growth and unity.

Soror Olivia Olatunji - Fall 2023

First Vice President

Olivia Olatunji is a junior Economics major, with double minors in Food Studies and Management & Organization from Frisco, Texas and currently serves as the First Vice President and Social Media Chair for the 2024-2025 academic year. Olivia’s favorite principle is sisterhood as she values and knows that mutual respect, unity and empathy are essential qualities that help communities flourish. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in finance, with a long-term goal of becoming a franchise owner of a Nigerian restaurant. As Vice President, Olivia is dedicated to fostering growth in the chapter and leaving a lasting legacy of genuine kindness and respect.

Soror Karmen Smith - Fall 2023

Second Vice President

Karmen Smith is a graduating senior majoring in Chemistry from Atlanta, GA, and currently serves as the Second Vice President for the 2024-2025 academic year. Karmen’s favorite principle is scholarship, as she views it as a testament to their dedication to academic excellence and work ethic. Following graduation, Karmen plans to pursue a fellowship, with the ultimate goal of becoming a licensed pharmacist. As Second Vice President, Karmen is committed to fostering ingenuity and innovation, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the chapter.

Soror Brandi Briggs - Fall 2023

Secretary

Brandi Briggs is a graduating senior Political Science major on the pre-law track from New Jersey and currently serves as the Secretary for the 2024-2025 academic year. Brandi’s favorite principle is Finer Womanhood as she believes in the importance of holding yourself to a higher standard and always remaining noble in character. Upon graduation, Brandi plans to gain experience in the legal field and soon after attend law school. As Secretary, Brandi’s hope is that Beta Iota continues to exemplify the principles and leave a positive impact on campus.

Soror Laila Montgomery -

Fall 2023 Parliamentarian

Laila Montgomery is a junior Political Science major from Centreville, Mississippi, and currently serves as the Parliamentarian for the 2024-2025 academic year. Laila’s favorite principle is Finer Womanhood, as it reminds her to continually strive to be the best version of herself possible and lift others as she climbs. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Masters in Sports Management, focusing in global sports business and the treatment of Black athletes. As Parliamentarian, Laila’s goal is to maintain the chapter’s credibility and integrity and ensure our understanding and growth in and out of our organization and college.

Soror Loren Lewis - Fall 2023

Treasurer

Loren Lewis is a junior Biology major, with a minor in Spanish from Newnan, Georgia and currently serves as the Treasurer for the 2024-2025 academic year. Loren’s favorite principle is scholarship because as she values the role education plays in our day to day life and believes in equal access to education regardless of background. After graduation, she plans to pursue her MD/PhD to become a pediatrician and work in cellular and molecular research. As Treasurer, Loren is dedicated to fostering financial growth in the chapter and leaving a lasting legacy inside and outside of the Spelman community. 

Soror Nila Roper - Fall 2023

Historian

Nila Roper is a junior English major with a minor in Comparative Women’s Studies from New Rochelle, New York serving as Historian for the 2024-2025 academic year. After graduating, she hopes to pursue a career in print journalism focusing on the social justice issues impacting marginalized communities. Nila’s favorite principle is service, as she believes that maintaining a dedication to one’s community and helping those in need should be every Zeta’s main goal. As the chapter Historian, Nila hopes to foster chapter growth and maintain a space of sisterhood and leadership opportunities for Spelman students.

Soror cheyanne sparkman - Fall 2023

Cheyanne Sparkman is a graduating senior, biochemistry major, with a minor in Spanish, from Chesapeake, Virginia, and currently serves as the Z-HOPE Coordinator for the 2024-2025 academic year. Cheyanne’s favorite principle is Finer Womanhood because she believes in pushing yourself to grow and sees this principle as a commitment to holding herself to the highest standard. After graduation, she plans to pursue her MD/PhD at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, with aspirations to specialize in forensic pathology and immunological research. As Z-HOPE Coordinator, Cheyanne is committed to seeing the chapter expand its influence and community outreach through initiatives such as Adopt-A-School and Stork’s Nest.
